Lincoln County Clerk of Superior Court

The Lincoln County Clerk's Office was set up to give the public open access to a fair and accurate record of the decisions and judgments of the judiciary. By law, the Clerk stays independent of the judicial branch. This independence protects the courts from any appearance of bias in how cases are set, orders are handled, or funds are managed. The Clerk is elected under Washington State Constitution Article IV, Section 26 and serves as the administrative and financial officer of Superior Court.

The Clerk receives and processes all documents presented in a Superior Court case. Processing includes record classification, assigning a cause number, computerized docketing, and filing. The Clerk also manages jury panels for the courts, issues subpoenas and warrants, and collects fees and court-ordered payments. All records are maintained, retained, and purged according to state law.

Case Types in Lincoln County Court Records

Lincoln County Superior Court handles multiple types of cases. Each case type is assigned a number in the Clerk's system. Knowing the case type can help narrow a search when you don't have a case number.

Case types filed in the Superior Court Clerk's Office include: criminal felony charges (case type 1), civil cases (case type 2), domestic and family law matters (case type 3), probate and guardianship (case type 4), paternity and adoption (case type 5), mental illness cases (case type 6), juvenile dependency, at-risk youth, child in need of services, and truancy (case type 7), and juvenile offender cases (case type 8). Most case types are open for public review. Adoptions, paternity files, and mental illness cases are confidential. Access to sealed records requires a court order.

Lincoln County Clerk duties and court records guide
This guide explains what the Lincoln County Clerk does, including filing and indexing records, managing jury panels, and serving as the financial officer for Superior Court.

Note: Chapter RCW 42.56 (the Public Records Act) does not apply to court documents. Court records are governed by court rules, specifically General Rule 31. Contact the Clerk's Office directly for court document requests, not the county's general public records officer.

Lincoln County Public Records Rules

Lincoln County uses a clear distinction between court records and county agency records. Court records from Lincoln County Superior Court or District Court must be requested from those courts directly. The county public records office handles non-court agency records only. This means if you want case files or court orders, you contact the Clerk, not the county's main public records office.

Lincoln County public records request process
Lincoln County's public records page explains the difference between court document requests and general agency records requests, and how to route each type correctly.

A valid public records request must ask for a specific and identifiable document. It cannot be a request for general information. Records covered include documents prepared, owned, used, or retained by any department of Lincoln County government. The format does not matter: paper, email, microfilm, audio, video, magnetic tape, and disks all count. For birth, death, marriage, or divorce certificates specifically, contact the Washington State Department of Health, not the county courts.

Fees apply for copying, scanning, and staff research time. Large or complex requests may need more time to fulfill. The county can help route requests to the right department if you are not sure where to direct them. Requests can go in by mail, in person, or by email to the public records officer.
