Court Record Access in King County

Washington's public records law under RCW 42.56 sets the standard for public access to government records. Court records are also covered by General Rule 31, which determines what is public and what can be restricted. GR 31 applies to all courts in King County, including the District Court that handles Sammamish cases.

Some records are not open to the public. Sealed cases, juvenile filings, and mental health matters may be restricted by order of the court or by state statute. If you need access to a sealed or confidential file, you may need to petition the court. Administrative records from the court (records about how the court operates, not about specific cases) are governed by GR 31.1. These records require a separate written request to the court's administrative records officer. The process differs from requesting a standard case file.
