Kent Court Records
Kent court records are split across three courts depending on the case type. The Kent Municipal Court handles city-level misdemeanors and traffic matters, while King County District Court South Division at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent covers a wider range of criminal and civil cases. For felonies, family law, and large civil matters, the King County Superior Court manages those files. You can search many Kent cases online using the statewide portal at dw.courts.wa.gov or through the KC Script Portal for Superior Court records. Official copies must come from the court where the case was filed.

Searching Kent Court Records Online
There are several ways to search Kent court records from home. Which tool you use depends on the court and case type you need.
The statewide portal at dw.courts.wa.gov covers municipal, district, superior, and appellate court cases across Washington. It updates daily at 3:00 a.m. and is free to use. Search by name or case number. Keep in mind that King County Superior Court cases are not searchable here. For those, use the KC Script Portal instead.
The Odyssey Portal covers 37 counties but does not include King County. So for Kent cases specifically, stick with the DW Courts portal for district and municipal records, and the KC Script Portal for Superior Court files. The Washington State Digital Archives also holds older Superior Court case files and lets you order certified or non-certified copies online. Non-certified copies cost $0.25 per page plus a $1 service charge per document. Certified copies are $5 for the first page plus $1 for each additional page.
Washington Laws Governing Kent Court Records
Court records in Washington are public by default. General Rule 31 (GR 31) sets the rules for public access to court records. It says courts must allow the public to view records at no charge. Copies can be charged at actual cost. Sealed records, juvenile files, and certain sensitive filings are exceptions to this rule.
RCW 42.56, the Public Records Act, covers most government records in Washington. However, court records are not subject to that act. They are governed by GR 31 and related court rules. RCW Chapter 36.23 outlines the duties of county clerks, including their role as the official keeper of Superior Court records. The Judicial Information System, authorized under RCW Chapter 2.68, provides the technical infrastructure behind online case search tools like JIS-Link.
When you request a certified copy, it carries a court seal and signature from the clerk. Those copies are used for legal purposes. A plain copy works for reference. If the record you need is sealed, you will need to file a court motion to seek access, and the court will decide whether to grant it.
